Religion
Islam originated in the 7th century with the teachings of the prophet Mohammad, a revered political and religious leader. Religions with a book and a prophet are accepted by Moslems. There are many churches and synagogues in Iran.
Very basically, the two main sects of Islam differ on the role after ascension after the death of Mohammad in 653.
The Shit’ites follow Ali, a cousin and son-in-law married to Mohammad’s honored daughter Fatima. Shi’ite stands for a devotee of Ali.
The Sunni are the followers of Abu Sakr, an effective figure. The Sunni are so named because they believe themselves to follow the Sunnah– or “custom” of the prophet.
Zorastarism is a pre-Islamic Persian religion founded by Zoroaster . It’s exact beginning is lost in the ages, but is thought to be in the 6th century B.C. Fire temples and burial sites remain and are fascinating to visit.

An Ancient Land
Millenniums ago the wild grains and lush grass of the area attracted the wandering tribes of the Stone Age. By 6,000 B.C. they were domesticating animals, and cultivating crops...the first footsteps of civilization.
About 900 B.C. the Aryan tribes arrived, giving the land its first name...Iran. Persia derives from the name of the province of Fars. The two main tribes were the Persians and the Medes, whom Cyrus unified, establishing the Persian Empire.
